"No no no, please don`t think you offended me or made me uncomfortable or whatever it was. I just... well, honestly, I don`t hang around people much. I like being outside in the forest, or near a lake. I guess I just don`t know how to carry on a conversation." Sam spoke quickly, eyes flashing with hope and regret. And there was some truth in there too, even though it was just a half truth.
-You need to work on your actions, Sam. He`s getting it.- She thought to herself in a cold tone. The winter had been slow, and she had met Alex. Her once prefect acting pretense had pretty much fallen apart once she got to know him. Well, that needed to stop now.
"Actually, I agree with you. It`s hard to find open-minded people in a big city. I wasn`t expecting it."

David nodded, smiling. Mostly to himself.
She's lying. I don't care.
He finished the last gulp of his hot chocolate, glancing around the room. A few people were glancing at the two of them, probably concerned about his messy, unkempt person being near a clean, attractive girl.
Some of them probably thought he was dangerous.
"I don't mean to impose, but can you give me a ride back into the city? A friend dropped me off earlier, and I don't have any other way home except walking."
He gave her a very toothy smile, purposefully being silly in hopes she'd say yes. It wasn't that he couldn't make it in less than an hour, he could run pretty fast.
But he was lazy, and it was pretty chilly out.

*He can tell.*
The thought ran cold and hard through her mind, and even her controlled body couldn't hold back the shiver that ran through her. This was odd, being like this. Her mind lacked words to describe how she felt.
*Fear. Anger. Jealousy,* her conscious whispered to her. Sam clenched her teeth together, trying to keep herself calm. She could feel her pulse quickening, and that meant she was getting warmer. And who knew what the guy could smell off of her. At least she was smart enough to have worn a flowery sort perfume, which could all but cover any emotion-related scent from being detected. Hopefully. Appearances were important, but sometimes the things that gave you away were things you couldn't change.
"Oh, sure. I'd hate to have to walk through all this snow and such, so I can understand that. We'll... just be going then?" She rose unsteadily from her chair, leaving her statement open. Right now--honestly--she had no idea what she was doing. This sort of situation had never occured before, and she had never been trained for anything similar to this at all. She just didn't know how to be around people anymore. She didn't know how to be normal.

He watched her raise shakily, smelt her flowery perfume and realized the only reason he'd just noticed was because she was uncomfortable.
He'd made her uncomfortable.
Concern flashed across his face and he looked her square in the eye, a touch of humility in his own.
Yes, he was a wolf. He enjoyed tearing into the flesh of baby bunnies and frolicking with random partners in the woods. But he still had human emotions. And he felt empathy for this girl.
"Listen," He said softly, so no one in the room could hear, "You don't have to if you don't want to."

Sam raised an eyebrow, easing herself back into her chair in her confusion. His answer had been completely... well, unexpected.
Gah! Pull it together, Sam! You're supposed to be an assassin, not somebody who walks around aimlessly without a clue! Snap back to normal. She gave herself mental orders and forced herself to compose her face. After all, the immortals were her thing, she could handle a little confusion.
And that look of concern in his eyes was really starting to bother her.
"No no, it's fine, really," She replied quickly, "I just didn't expect... you to say that, I guess." The sure tone in her voice melted away, and by the time she finished speaking she sounded just as confused as she really felt. Well, at least that was the truth and he wouldn't think she was lying.
"Like I said earlier, I just don't talk to very many people, let alone meet them in the woods and have coco with them," she shook her head back and forth slowly, "I'm sorry if I seemed... uncomfortable to you." Sam raised her eyes to meet David's and pushed her hair out of her face. Her blue-grey eyes would hold the truth, and she knew that. Something clicked suddenly, and she realized why he might have though she was uncomfortable-- because she had been.
The fact that he could see through her facade, her dark life, infuriated her. She had been trained endlessly, mercilessly tracked and killed over a hundred immortals without more than a few scars. In the time of a peacefull winter, she had lost something.
And he could tell.
Sam bit the inside of her lip and slowly leaned back into her chair. This was new. No one had ever seen through her before. Sure, David didn't exactly know she was an assassin for the government tracking down any immortal in the state that got out of line. He didn't know about the lives she had taken, and he couldn't. And if he did, he would have to be killed.

David was a nonjudgemental person. He had few triggers, and even less anger to stand behind them. He was open minded and honest, and as a rule generally was very open to the honesty or dishonesty of others. Even if he had know the truth about the pretty girl in front of him, would he have cared? No.
He could tell she had some secrets. Did it matter? No.
He smiled slightly, noting the confusion and then the truth in her eyes.
"I can understand that." He said nodding.
"Strange people used to make me uncomfortable too. But I honestly mean you no harm, and in fact want nothing more than perhaps friendship from you. I enjoy the company of people. "
He gave a little laugh, being openly honest with this, "My favorite thing to do is go to the clubs with my friend Luke and just sit surrounded by people."

She could actually feel her mind slip into the special place it always went to when she was working. A calmness washed over her and she had the odd sensation of being out-of-mind, like she was merely watching, not acting. The immortals might be able to sense lies and fear, but not very many could see past the wall she could build up. What lies could be found if she forced herself to believe they were true?
So Sam let her thoughts fall into place, her calm speculation telling her exactly what she needed to do and say.
"I... wasn't thinking that you were going to hurt me or anything," she started slowly. *Luke, he said something about a Luke.* Just a few nights ago she had met a were named Luke at a bar. She had asked him about another were she was chasing, and hadn't gotten much out of him. It probably wasn't the same Luke, but it seemed odd.
"And actually, you seem really nice. Perhaps... friendship would be nice." Sam smiled at David and gave herself a small nod. If she was honest with herself, she knew that she was lonely. Friends couldn't be all that bad, after all.

David sensed the truth behind her words and the slight tension in his shoulders relaxed.
"Well good."
Still leaning on the table, he smiled down at her, a lazy half smile that showed his comfort level. He was comfortable around this girl, almost instantaneously. He was very trusting.
"So, mind giving a friend a ride back into the city?" He raised his eyebrows and grinned.
"I kinda have a date larter and wanna get cleaned up."

The thought didn't show on her face--most didn't--and she barely noticed the change herself. When she did, she dismissed it quickly without really recognizing that she did so. That was how a lot of things had been since the government had taken her up into their secret clan of killers.
The thing about being with the assassins was that she had to be so careful. She killed the extraordinary, the unreal, the immortal. Most of them didn't like that, and some tried to come after her. Not all, of course, but there were a few that tried. Sam heard stories of assassins stationed in other states that had been found and tortured to death by insane immortals. She herself had been lucky in the fact that she never came in contact with someone she wasn't supposed to. But now thing were different.
She had met Alex and now Daivd. Alex had become her immediate friend, and it looked like she had gained David as well. Being a killer was a lonely profession, and the prospect of being with people and enjoying the company of others, well, it was overwhelmingly welcome.
And without even realizing it, Sam realized that she was jealous.
David had a life. He could basically do whatever he wanted. Obviously he had enough sexual parteners during the full moon to not become insane, because Sam hadn't know him until today.
And he had a date tonight.
The feeling was brief, and Sam knew that it didn't show on her face, but it hit her hard. The feeling was different... odd. That she felt it at all was just unnerving.
"Of course," she replied, smiling and scooting out of the seat, "wouldn't want you to be late."

"Awesome."
David had been raised by humans. He had human mannerisms, and when he liked a girl that wasn't a Wolf he tended to actually take her out and impress her. The illegality of his money making practices tended to give him lots of cash to fling around, and that usually got him laid on the best of days.
During the full moon, he was like any other Wolf, he ran out and enjoyed himself with as many others Wolfs as he could.
He pulled out his wallet, leaving a nice sized tip on the table and flourished his arms theatrically, to motion Sam ahead of him.
