"Thanks."
She gave him a smile as she headed down the hall and opened a small door. Inside was a washer and dryer, one stakced on the other. She was throwing the clothes in when he asked how long she'd been there.
"About 3 years."
Larus had organized a huge heist and her share had paid for this apartment. But he didn't need to know that.
She ventured back into the living room, and having no clue what to do with herself sat on the couch beside him. "It's actually a lot nicer than my last place. At least here I have a lock on the door and a bit of privacy."
She shrugged lightly, watching him as she pulled her legs up beneath her. She took in his features, his scars. She wanted to ask about them. Wanted to touch them. But she stay silent on the subject.
"Want anything to drink?"

Three years was a long time. Xaver couldn't count on his fingers the amount of places he had lived in the last three years. Given, he was a nomad with enough money to sustain a bachelor's lifestyle, but he didn't really know what it was like to stay in one place for so long. All his life, he'd been on the move. His home was the sky.
"It's actually a lot nicer than my last place. At least here I have a lock on the door and a bit of privacy."
No locks? "I imagine this is a great deal better than that." He nodded solemnly, eyes trailing over her in interest.
He shook his head to her offer of a drink. He was comfortable, but, truth be told, he didn't trust her. He liked her, but he knew nothing about her. He'd been the mercenaries' greatest target for years and wasn't about to put up slack for a pretty girl he'd just met. Not yet, at least.
"No, thank you." He shifted on his seat, turning so that his left leg was bent and tucked beneath him and his left arm was draped over the back of the couch, the other hand resting on his thigh. "Tell me. Why were you in that bar, Ginny? Why did we meet in the first place?"

His question hit her like a punch in the stomach. She knew he'd be disgusted, and considered making something up. But, why? It would come out eventually.
"You aren't going to like this."
She paused, her face falling into a soft frown.
"I'm a thief."
Suddenly she started talking so fast, her words tripping over themselves.
"I work with a group of guys. It started when I was a kid, and I can't get out. I do what Larus says or I get hit. I do it or I starve. I do it or they go after my parents. I've stolen from nons and humans a like, but Larus targets nons. I'm the candy used for the sweeter deals, the ones that require some finesse..."
She gasped for breath, wrapping her arms around herself, "The night we met, I was aiming to make some petty steals in the club. I was supposed to find a non who looked like he had money, lure him out and to a hotel down the street. Larus said I wasn't in any danger. Once we got there, him and his boys would take down the non, strip him and take everything he had. Then they would sell him..."
She shuddered, "I don't like what I do, but I don't have a choice. That night you helped me, when you stopped me from getting raped or killed or I don't even know, I really messed up."
She finally raised her eyes, "Larus wasn't happy."
Xaver didn't need to know about the fight. He didn't need to know Larus had left her bruised. he didn't need to know the other things Larus made her do. She worked for him, was essentially his slave. All because she felt like she had no other choice.
She'd never told anyone.

"I'm a thief."
Xaver stared at her. She had been right - he didn't like it. Perhaps, though, for different reasons than she thought. He knew she was better than thieving.
She began to speak, and quickly - and Xaver let her. He let her go on until she was done, his thoughts running a mile a minute to keep up with her.
"Larus wasn't happy."
Xaver's features hardened. He stared at Ginny for a long moment, inhumanly still and not a breath moving throughout his body. Larus, was it? He sounded like a petty, masochistic thug. A thug that, Xaver realized, would beat Ginny. Looking at her more closely now, his mind could imagine lines and shades that should never have been there.
He reached out, slowly, finding a lock of her hair that had fallen astray from her ponytail and twirling its silky tresses through his fingers.
"A non who looked like he had money. The wolf, or me?" His smile was grim. "How could you have messed up? You shouldn't have been there in the first place."
Xaver released her hair, and finally looked for her eyes. "What do you need to get out?"

"The wolf, or me?"
"I..I didn't even see you." She stuttered, ashamed.
She didn't get to explain that she messed up by letting him remove her from the situation. That Larus hadn't gotten his non, hadn't made any money.
"What do you need to get out?"
His words startled her. Getting out wasn't an option. Not as long as she was alive, and her parents were alive. She had no clue if her parents had moved since she last saw them, but she hoped they had. But she would never get out.
"There is no getting out. I'm in till I die." She said, shrugging her shoulders softly.
Sure, she might be able to out fight Larus one day. But then his men would come after her. Or that guy Larus referred to as boss.

"I..I didn't even see you." Of course she didn't, why would she? After all, it wasn't he with the shock of red hair and body that could disarm a man in a radius of twenty miles. He was a Fallen mope who would hide in bars for fear of conversation with the real world. He preferred being alone in the dark, and she was a shiny, vibrant light. "There is no getting out. I'm in till I die."
Xaver looked at her unwaveringly, then in his lowest tone replied, "I highly doubt that. You have will, and we will find a way." He didn't know quite why he said it, but he meant every word. He nodded in affirmation, eyes searching her face. Call him old-fashioned, or what you would, but Xaver couldn't stand it when women were abused. He knew many that could hold their own just as well as he ever could, but that didn't mean he wouldn't hold the door for them. Or help them out of a pretty tight spot, he thought pointedly, looking at Ginny.
Xaver's gaze never faltered, though something inside did. What was he doing? She was a fucking human, and just as there was no chance of snow in hell that she would be interested, there was less that he would be allowed to be. She was perfect and he liked her greatly, but a sense of feelings always brought a quick death or maiming to those he associated with.
He looked away, at odds with himself.
"It probably wasn't a good idea, mine, to come here. I wish you no harm and have only caused thus for you since we met." Xaver gave her a brash, false smile, rising slowly. "For that I apologize."

"I highly doubt that. You have will, and we will find a way."
She was ready to protest. It was her problem, not his. But he was the first person who knew her situation. It was the first time someone had offered her help to get out of it.
Then he started to stand.
"It probably wasn't a good idea, mine, to come here. I wish you no harm and have only caused thus for you since we met." He apologized.
She was suddenly angry, strangely upset. Like a child who's toy was about to be taken, her face clouded over.
"It wasn't your idea." She said, her voice thick as she too stood.
"You have to stay until your clothes are dry, at least." She wanted him to stay. To talk to her, to chat. She wanted his closeness, his scent. She took a step closer, not realizing how much his proposal of leaving had bothered her.
It showed in her face. worry, sadness, longing.
"Just, stay till then. Please..."
Why did she care so much? She wasn't hard hearted, but she truly didn't want him to leave. All of the possibilities of bad things suddenly ran through her head and she wanted to beg him to stay.

She rose behind him. Asked him to stay.. She even said please. Xaver walked to her and stopped just before her, not an inch from her form. He towered above her, eyes boring into hers, her scent enveloping him and pissing him off as much as much as arousing him.
"Why, Ginny? Why in the hell would you want me around after all of this?"
He sighed and brought his large hands to her face, gently cupping her cheeks within them, his fingers tangling in her hair.
"You don't know what's good for you, do you?" He shook his head, sighing exasperatedly. "Because it's not Larus, and sure as hell isn't me."

"All of what?" She questioned, her voice trembling as he touched her face. She was confused and upset and so badly wanted him to stay. His presence was intoxicating, his nearness enough to power her for days, it felt like.
She realized with a start how insanely attracted to him she was. How dangerously attracted. How stupidly.
"You don't know what's good for you, do you?"
"How do you know you aren't good for me?" She asked, her voice pitched slightly higher. She wanted to grab him, pull him close to her, run her hands over his chest. She raised her hand, then dropped it, clenching her fists.
"How do you know?"
She felt adrenaline surge through her body again, coupled with the magnetizing attraction. She looked up at him, not understanding anything.
"You don't know, any better than I do. Please, Xaver, just stay for a little longer..."

"How do you know you aren't good for me?" Because she was better.. Because.. "How do you know?" He didn't, and that scared the hell out of him.
She was a drug to his senses. She smelled good. She felt good, beneath his touch. His gaze trailing to the swell of her lips, he was prepared to wager his entire fortune that she tasted good, as well.
"You don't know, any better than I do. Please, Xaver, just stay for a little longer..." Stay... Suddenly that had more meaning to him than waiting for his clothes to dry. It was all happening so fast..
Hands still gently holding her face, he tilted his head to touch his forehead to hers. "This is crazy," he murmured softly.
He kissed her. There were so many reasons not to. It was wrong, he knew better, she was a human.. It all faded when he sloped his mouth over hers and brought the sweet crush of her lips to his own, moving, plundering, tasting for what felt like eternity.

"This is crazy."
His words echoed in her head as he brought his lips to hers. She closed her eyes, instantly responding by wrapping her arms around his neck, her fingers wrapping themselves in his hair, becoming tangled, her nails scraping his scalp softly as they kissed.
She finally drew back with a breath, surprised to find that built up arousal hadn't exploded away, but had intensified. God, he was a good kisser.
She looked into his eyes, her heart pounding heavily. She was flush up against him now, like she had wanted to be, and she found she loved the feeling. She had goosebumps trickling over her skin like ice water, the effects of his kiss.
Ginny didn't know what to say, so she kissed him again.

Her arms wrapped around his neck, her fingers delving into his hair. Xaver inhaled sharply, her nails drawing goosebumps down the back of his neck. She withdrew and the pounding in his chest became suddenly obvious to him. She was as close to him as space allowed, but he wanted more. She looked up at him, and Xaver rubbed a thumb over her cheek and the lower pad of her lip. When she drew toward him again, Xaver met her half-way, a hand trailing into her hair and pulling out the band that contained it, and the other pressing into her back. Pushing her closer, and pulling her to him as he slowly backed up to the couch. When his calves hit the edge, he grinned against her lips and reached around to her backside, easily lifting her onto his lap and sitting down.
He broke the kiss as he sat, but didn't move his hands. Grinning like a man who knew he was going to get into trouble at some time or another, he shook his head.
"This is crazy."

She was on his lap now, straddling him in what to her had always been considered a very sexual position. She didn't care.
"This is crazy." He repeated, and she nodded, shrugging her shoulders and grinning back.
"I don't recall any part of our conversations mentioning how sane either of us is." Ginny kept her voice comically even, forcing it to not reveal her excitement.
She ran her hands down his chest, shivering as she touched him.
"It is crazy." She finally agreed, pushing her lips to his once more in an almost frenzied manner.

"I don't recall any part of our conversations mentioning how sane either of us is."
Xaver chuckled softly, running his hands over her ass and to her hips, gripping and pulling her closer still. She ran her hands down his chest, and he groaned softly in approval.
"Quite the contrary, actually," he murmured huskily. "So far our conversations have been anything but... sane."
He was grinning as she pushed her lips to his. His eyes remained open for a breath, taking in the sight of her pretty red hair spilling about them before they closed and he kissed her back, fiercely. He ran his hands along her sides, squeezing her rump and softly laughing into her mouth.
This was all nuts. He had just met her, but.. it felt like he'd known her for years. His soul, long locked behind walls of ice and distrust, lurched at her touch.

"Damn..."
Ginny stopped kissing him but kept her face close to his. She was breathing heavily with the surprise and perfection of the kisses.
This was ridiculous. This was only the second time they'd ever seen each other. They'd killed people today. And now they were on her couch making out like some middle school kids.
What if this was just the adrenaline left over from the day? What if it wasn't? Ginny decided that, at the moment, she didn't care. His hands roaming over her body felt good, his skin under her hands felt good, his kisses felt good. It was the first time she could recall feeling good about something like this.
She looked into his eyes, unsure suddenly. "You might not believe me, but I don't do this very often."
