Nathaniel was restless as always. It was night time, and the NHRA hadn't called yet. Something was wrong. With the rash of murders that had cropped up, he was just waiting for the call. It would come before too long. The waiting, though, drive him nuts.
He decided that he needed some fresh air. It was too stuffy anywhere indoors, so the park seemed like a fairly logical place to go. He shed his shirt, grabbed his coat, tucked it in his belt, and took off from his apartment. Swiftly he flew, the wind buffering him high above the city. Ah, it was nice in the sky. Cars were but small ants, and nothing bad could be seen. He circled around twice, checking his neighborhood from above before sailing toward the park. First, he saw the pond of the park, which glowed with the light of the moon. He smiled. Nathaniel had always liked the moon.
Slowly, he made his descent, before landing very lightly on the grass beside the pond. His white wings shimmered on the surface of the water before they disappeared as he hid them away. He slid his coat over his black tattoo and let it settle into place.
The fallen set out for his favorite bench in the park and he flung himself on it with practiced grace. It was one of the least favored benches during the day, for there was no shade. At night, though, with the pond near-by to look at, and the heavens clear for viewing, it was the best seat in the park. The stars, which could only be faintly seen in other parts of the city, stood out more in this dark, unlit section of land. He lifted a finger and traced a few of the constellations with his hand before letting it fall to his side again.
Then he looked around him again. There, beside the pond in a little hollow, a duck and her ducklings were sleeping with their faces all tucked into their wings. It was adorable, and Nathaniel sat back to watch them. He let his thoughts wonder for a while, in the peace of the park and the tranquility of the pond. For the first time in a long while, he didn't think about the murder investigation he was on. It even plagued him in his sleep, so it was nice to let it fall into the background if only for a few moments.
Before long, his thoughts came back to reality. There was an unsolvable case that he had to solve. There just wasn't much to go on. A psycho killer that targeted innocents. No clues were left behind. No witnesses to be found. It was the perfect crime, and that did not sit well with Nathaniel. He knew the saying, that there was no such thing as a perfect crime. That meant that there had to be something he missed. For the life of him, he couldn't figure out what it was.
He sighed and stretched out his shoulders, realizing his thoughts had made him tense again. It was enough that his cell phone wasn't ringing. That was a good sign. Maybe it would even make it through the entire night. Yeah, that was the hope. Maybe the NHRA had assigned another sleuth to the case. That would be a relief if nothing else, but no one would touch this case even if he offered. So, that meant that no other murders had occurred yet. No news is good news. That saying had multiple meanings, and Nathaniel understood every one of them after this case.
